The Social Performance Standards
Since 2005, the global, industry-wide Social Performance Task Force (SPTF) has focused on developing ways to measure social performance in microfinance. One of the achievements of this initiative has been the creation of 22 social performance indicators to assess how an MFI aligns its systems to its mission and how it uses social performance information to reach its social goals. The Social Performance Report compiles information on these indicators. The SPTF updated this year's report with the aim to make the indicators more comprehensive and the reports easier to complete.
Social Performance Information Exchange
MIX began collecting information on social performance in 2009, and 212 MFIs already submitted Social Peformance Reports during the first year. MIX uses information from reports to present and analyze the current trends in social performance and some preliminary findings have already been published through posts on the SP data on this blog. The SP Reports also serve as a guide to determine which MFIs to interview for the blog with regard to their successes and challenges on different areas of social performance management.
The Business Case
The SPTF publication "Reporting Social Performance to MIX: Benefits for Microfinance Institutions," which is available on MIX webpage, presents the business case for MFIs to report on social performance. In an industry with growing global attention and scrutiny, transparency has become vitally important. MFIs that submit the SP Reports demonstrate to investors, donors, peers, and the global community the ways in which they are working toward achieving their development goals.
International Recognition
CGAP, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Ford Foundation established a Social Performance Reporting Award in 2009 to promote transparency among MFIs. The award, administered by MIX, rewards openness and accountability in reporting, as opposed to the actual performance of MFIs on these measures.
This year, the Inter-American Development bank is sponsoring the Inter-American Awards for Microenterprise Development 2010. Among the awards is a monetary award, sponsored by the Citi Foundation, for MFIs in Latin American and the Caribbean for Best Practices in Social Performance. One of the requirements to be considered for the award is to submit the 2009 SP Report to MIX.
